Seattle Bindery Newsletter: Issue #7. We welcome your comments.

1. Talk about come-from-behinds . . . printCafe (www.printcafe.com), the newbie on the e-print scene has pulled out all the stops in its bid for top dog. Last week’s press release from Hagen OA announced it has merged into printCafe, along with Programmed Solutions, which happens to be the computerized shop floor management system we use at Seattle Bindery. It looks like the last barrier, integration with printers’ existing production systems, has been breached. Prograph and Creo created printCafe, which also reports a marketing alliance with RR Donnelley. Whew!

2. Just finished a cool project on our new MBO Perfection folder . . . 50,000 accordion folded brochures for a major cataloger. Six folds, and yet these puppies absolutely flew through the equipment. A sight to behold!

3. It’s that wonderful time of year again . . . tax time. To help us out, the IRS has posted tax forms on its website: www.irs.ustreas.gov or www.irs.ustreas.gov/prod/forms_pubs/forms.html/tracking/tracking.html. And the forms aren’t just for corporations. I downloaded Form 1040 EZ for my 16-year old daughter’s first tax return. There are W-4 forms for new employees and instructions for those 1099s you have to send out for payments to non-corporate vendors. It really is a great resource.

4. It appears some consolidators are suggesting their disappointing performance is due to the industry’s poor performance. At least Consolidated Graphics is struggling to reconcile its sales decline by pointing to NAPL’s recent industry data that noted for the first time in 15 years industry growth is lagging behind overall national economic growth.

5. Tips from my friend TJ Tedesco regarding voice mail hell: 1. Don’t ask for callbacks (why ask when you know they won’t?). 2. Keep messages short. 3. Always schedule a follow-up “to do.” 4. Use negatives to get responses, e.g., “If you don’t want me to stop by next Tuesday at 9:00am, call me.” Sounds like sound advice to me. You can find Tedesco’s entire article about voice mail on our website.
