2. Industry Downsizing. Just how bad was it last year? Final tallies reveal that in 2001, a total of 1,700 plants were shut down and 60,000 employees were laid off. Results from PIA’s latest Quarterly Market Survey also indicate the downsizing isn’t over yet. Overall, 1 in 3 companies reported a reduction in their employee headcount, while just 15% reported an increase in headcount. Of the reasons given for the staff reductions, the most popular answers were “layoffs from slow business,” “not replacing retirements” and “productivity improvements.” 3. Tip of the Week. Here’s a way to save money for your clients: when a tab project calls for mylar reinforcements, encourage clients to use tab configurations that can be mylar-coated automatically by machine. Usually, this means sticking to a standard tab shape, not a custom shape. Avoid shingle tabs--those that overlap and increase in size as they progress from top to bottom--which cannot be machine mylared if they extend more than half the sheet length. Also, if the project calls for cover tabs (tabs that cover the entire length of the divider sheet), keep in mind that only clear mylar can be applied automatically by machine. 4. Free Pick Up and Delivery. Yup, that’s right. Seattle Bindery offers free pick up and delivery on all local orders. No need to arrange your own pick up and delivery...just give us a call when you need it and we’ll send over one of our three trucks. 5. What Makes a Great Leader. Check out the May 2002 issue of Printing Impressions. On page 76 is a well-written article by Harris DeWese on what makes a leader in our industry truly great. Among some of the qualities he listed: “leaders of great printing companies are balanced in their attention to the functions of management...they don’t dwell on market or sales or operations or finance or administration,” though they “are always involved in sales. They celebrate sales and the sales people.” Great leaders are also “always great simplifiers...they can communicate complexity with great clarity so that even the least among colleagues understands and “gets it.” DeWese’s “dream leaders work to cause growth and the development of great people.” Finally, “great leaders never have to tell you how great they are...you just know it. You can smell greatness in 15 minutes.”
