Seattle Bindery Newsletter: Issue No. 52. We welcome your comments.

1.      Graphic Arts on the Web. Some readers asked where to go on the Web for graphic arts news. Here are some sources worth checking out:

·        Graphic Arts Monthly eGam Weekly Briefing (sign up at www.gammag.com/egam)
·        Printing Impressions Weekly eMail Newsletter (sign up at www.piworld.com/piweekly/refer)
·        Pacific Printing and Imaging Association (www.ppi-assoc.org)
·        PIA’s Graphic Arts Information Network (www.gain.org)
·        The Ti Monthly (
www.traversant.com/company/newsletters.htm)

2. Speaking of Websites… You’ll find it easier to look up old newsletter topics  now that the search function has gone live on our Website. Just click “Search” on the main menu on our homepage and type in the keywords you’re looking for.

3. New IT Depreciation Schedules. The law regarding the IT depreciation schedule has changed, now allowing companies to take an additional 30% depreciation on new computers and peripheral equipment purchased for manufacturing. Great news, considering the old tax code required computers to be depreciated over a five-year period. The practice didn’t make sense for today, given that IT equipment typically becomes obsolete in just 14 to 36 months. PIA argued that the old tax code discouraged printers from investing in IT and their study suggested that computer sales to printers would grow 20% if the depreciation schedule reflected the actual useful lifetime of the equipment.

4. Terms and Conditions for the Digital Age. Back in April, we reported that PIA was putting together new guidelines for doing business in the digital age. Well, they’re now available and you can find them on the Graphic Arts Information Network website at www.gain.org. Search for “Best Industry, Business Practices,”

5. Tip of the Week. This came from Marty Anson’s 9/01 article in Printing Journal, entitled “Here’s more of why jobs come late from the bindery” (p. 25). Among some of his tips: “When a job is ready to go to the finisher, be sure to include all of the necessary information and all of the products in your shipment: signatures, covers, rule-ups, dielines, bluelines, a copy of the PO and any other pertinent information.” Another tip: “Before shipping work to the bindery, it is critical to properly secure the material. Because most jobs arrive as signatures or as flat sheets, they cannot be placed in cartons. Steel strapping and endboards (for web signatures) are necessary to ensure their safe arrival.”

6. Holiday Hours. A reminder that we’ll be closed Thursday 11/22 through Sunday 11/25 for the Thanksgiving holiday. Our regular hours are Monday – Friday 6:30 AM – 11:30 PM with phones being answered from 7:30 AM until 5:00 PM.
