Seattle Bindery Newsletter: Issue No. 50. We welcome your comments.

1. Meetings This Week. What’s the first thing people think of when they hear the word “Seattle”? Probably our beloved Space Needle, thanks to the marketing successes of Kim E. Kimmy from Kim Kimmy Enterprises. Coming up this Wednesday, October 17 at 6:00 PM, Kimmy will be sharing her expertise at the Craftsmen Club meeting in a seminar titled “20 Marketing Tips in 20 Minutes.”  Also that day, a PPI meeting is scheduled from noon to 1:30 at the Swedish Club. PPI will be presenting a recap of what went on at Seybold SF. Both meetings are worth checking out, so be sure to call Judy at Seattle Bindery for more information.

2. Layoff on the Layoffs? If you’re thinking about it, Business Week (10/8/01, p. 42) urges you to consider the consequences: potential lawsuits from angry workers, loss of trust and commitment from remaining staff members and a lack of staffers when the economy rebounds (and it will). On the flip side, retaining your staff during tough times will create more loyalty and motivation, benefiting both your customers and you. When the economy awakens from its light sleep, you’ll not only be equipped with an edge over your competitors, you’ll also have a staff that is more comfortable with change when job security is high.

3. Tip of the week: To prevent transit marking, use lighter-weight cartons to ship your printed items. When cartons are stacked one on top of another, the lighter cartons “give,” putting more pressure on the inner contents and minimizing their movement during transit. Shrinkwrapping or proper cover coatings such as UV, film and dry varnish also help to keep inks from rubbing off the book covers. For more in-depth information on preventing transit marking, visit the “interesting reading” section in our website library for 3 articles by Marty Anson and Frank Shear.

4. Didn’t know that Seattle Bindery could finish a 30,000-run job in just one business day? The piece was an 8 1/2” x 11” letterfold on cover stock with two tear-out cards on the bottom panel. Normally this would be a letterpress score/perf job and would take a couple days to complete, with other vendors involved. But with our Rollem, we were able to complete the job much, much faster. Rollem, score ‘n perf . . . whew, bring on the next one!

5. Free Advice. All over the West Coast this week, printCafe and CreoScitex will be hosting free half-day seminars “guiding printing professionals on how to manage their businesses to maximize profits.” Stuart Margolis, best known for the PIA Ratio Studies, will be speaking. If you’re interested, there’s one being held in Portland, at the Red Lion Coliseum on Thursday (10/18), 8:00 am - 11:30 am. As you may know, Seattle Bindery uses printCafe’s PSI print management system. I’m guessing the seminars will concentrate heavily on the best use of printCafe’s and CreoScitex’s products.
