Seattle Bindery Newsletter: Issue No. 46. We welcome your comments.

1. Great press for Telepress. Our good friends at Telepress landed a front-page story  in this month’s Printing Journal for their brand management capabilities. It appears the firm (and its co-owner Terry Deschenes) has made a name for itself managing the graphic assets of large companies like Hewlett-Packard and Boeing. They began by building a detailed, organized and efficient repository of clients’ logo information, as well as the layouts needed for cards, envelopes and letterhead. They now have online ordering and proofing. Terry happens also to be active in PPI. Good work, Terry and friends!

2. Need another good reason to outsource? We covered several points in our last newsletter and at the PPI seminar, but here’s another one. If you’ve had the unpleasant task of having to lay off people during this downturn, you don’t want to make the mistake of bringing them back on board only to have to lay them off again. You can outsource that production work until you’re confident volume is back where it needs to be.

3. Custom and cute. We just finished up a unique 140,000 piece job for a local coffee company: Two-and-a-half inch x three inch, eight-page, saddle-stitched mini-brochures, featuring die-cut corners. We got ‘em in and out in no time. This prompts another “did you know we did that” reminder. In addition to perfect binding, Wire-O and spiral binding, we die-cut small jobs and large, handling sheet sizes up to 41-inches.

4. E-Update. By now, you’ve probably heard that Collabria recently went under, leaving only a couple of ASPs on the scene. Most notable, of course, is printCafé, which recently “signed an agreement to provide enterprise-wide print procurement solutions to General Motors Corp,” according to the Printing Impressions e-newsletter, www.piworld@napco.com. Picking up Collabria’s assets, including customers, is Printable, which, according to the Printing Journal, touts an e-business enabled website and other tools to improve proofing communication between printer and client.

5. Tip of the Week. As our friend and colleague Marty Anson of Bindagraphics wrote in one of his columns, “Paper, ink and coatings, like people, can crack under stress.” Since we do a lot of folded pieces that require letterpress scoring, here are a few reminders: a. Call us. Upfront planning will prevent costly mistakes. b. Heavy uncoated and coated papers generally require scoring to avoid cracking. However, some common coated stocks, like Kromekote and Lustrokote, can be problematic because it may not be heavy enough to hold the hinge. If you want to totally eliminate fracturing, convince your customers to go with a premium coated sheet. c. And, finally, expect to score all projects requiring full ink coverage over folded areas.
