Seattle Bindery Newsletter: Issue #30. We welcome your comments.
1. Green again. It appears the environment will again be in sharp focus as concern over global warming heats up. If you remember about 10 years ago, Corporate America spent lots of time and money marketing their green virtues. Printers, for their part, extolled recycling, soy-base inks, recycled papers, etc. It also appears that going green begets green. The January 8 issue of www.businessweek.com reports that the market valuation of companies with strict global environmental standards was some 80% higher than that of companies using local less-stringent environmental standards. Moral? Eco-friendly companies are likely good new business prospects, and we all should look for ways we can contribute to this global movement.
2. Tab layout templates. We can now email you our two tab layout templates, one
with a one-quarter-inch inset and the other with a one-eighth-inch inset, which
you can import directly into your prepress software. The templates—which can
be printed on proofs but omitted in the final run—are set up as a separate
color layer to help you accurately line up any tab configuration. Email your
request to miltvine@seattlebindery.com
and we’ll send them right along.
3. CIP3. Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) has been grabbing the spotlight
lately as more printers adopt the technology. The Summer 2000 issue of Vue/Point: The Hard Copy www.vue-point.com
featured printers who have deployed CIP3, the Consortium for the Integration of
Prepress, Press and Postpress. While admitting to stumbling blocks during
implementation, all believe that the “software is maturing and CIP3 will be
the way to go in the future.” Since that was six months ago, bets are on that
maturation has taken some significant leaps forward. For those who’ve
instituted CTP, now might be a good time to explore the next integration step.
4.
Bulk rate deadline. A reminder that January 10, 2001 is rapidly approaching. As
you may remember from our last issue, that is the date the USPS www.usps.gov
says “Bulk Rate” will no longer be accepted on printed indicia. Keep in mind
the new words to use on indicia are “Presorted Standard” or “Prsrt Std.”
Remind your customers of this before they get to the printing stage!
