Seattle Bindery Newsletter: Issue #24. We welcome your comments.

1. Paper News. Bowater Incorporated announced that it will curtail production of market pulp during the fourth quarter of 2000 by at least 25,000 metric tons, or approximately 10% of quarterly production capacity. Doesn’t bode well for stabilized paper prices. And veteran Boise Cascade has added office products to its paper business and just forged an agreement with SupplyPro, Inc., an automated point-of-use inventory and information systems management firm. Boise is now the first major contract stationer to offer automated inventory management to customers.

2. Web site Updates. Check out our new upgraded site. After reorganizing the menu bar and deleting all frames on pages, it should load a lot faster and more consistently. We also have a library section which includes back issues of newsletters, an online quote guide, a new online “Tips for Tabs” with layout guide, folding layouts, new equipment list and last, but not least, a map and directions to our facilities. You’ll also find the interesting article I just read on Forbes.com entitled “10 Things To Do Before You Die.”

3. New bedfellows. Vendor coalitions were the name-of-the-game at Graph Expo 2000, and none was more high-profile than Heidelberg’s. Heidelberg and Atlas Software B.V., the creator of the Variable Information Printing solution, PrintShop Mail, announced the formation of a strategic alliance between the two companies to bundle Atlas’ PrintShop Mail software with the Heidelberg Digimaster 9110. Heidelberg also announced a NexPress 2000 partnership and is expected to up the color caliber of its next generation digital presses.

4. Stitching News. We are replacing the older of our two stitchers with a newer McCain model. The new stitcher clocks at rated speeds thousands per hour faster than the older model. The bottom-line? A more reliable piece of equipment equals more predictable deadlines. Installation should be complete by the end of the month.

5. Our friend Kevin Keane outdid himself in the 126th issue of IAPHC’s Tuesday Morning News (http://www.iaphc.org/tmn/archive/2000/00july04/news.htm). Citing multiple sources, in particular Chicago’s IPA Press 2000 Seminar, Keane offers a very good synopsis of dot-com currents and why printers need to continue to pay attention. (Don’t forget you can just click on the hot link in our library copy, if you don’t like to type.)
