Seattle
Bindery Newsletter: Issue #23. We welcome your comments.
1. Graph Expo. I felt just like a kid in a candy store with no money, but
returned from Chicago with visions of new equipment and products dancing in my
head. While we didn’t purchase anything, I certainly had a great time
networking and checking out the latest and greatest new equipment. Lots of
homework awaits us as we investigate which fits our current configuration and
which will bring us the best ROI. (We ex-CPAs just love this stuff!)
2. Hot off the press! Seattle Bindery’s new Tips for Tabs booklet will soon be
appearing in your mailbox. Chock full of useful information about tabs and how
to order them, the updated guide is a great resource to keep on hand. Of course,
if you’re not on our mailing list, just ask for Judy. She’ll make sure you
get your very own personal copy.
3. Quick printing projections. Our favorite print pundit, IAPHC’s Kevin Keane,
predicts the cost of digital printing will go down, the quality will go up and
the number of digital color printers will soar. Since the new digital presses
are also being designed for direct mail, flyers, brochures,
catalogs and stationery components, we should expect to see a growing chunk of
commercial printing being redirected to digital printing. Oh, and the
wide-format digital color printing market is expected to reach over $21 billion
by 2004. What was that about scaling down to the cellular level?
4. Speaking of tabs. A reminder that two of our tabbing machines run at a clip
of 10,000 tabs per hour. (0ur other has a throughput of 6,000 tabs/hour.) We can
crank out customized tabs that are cut, reinforced, collated and drilled . . .
for any project, on any deadline. We can run tabs
that are printed on one or two sides, tabs in a range of sizes and
configurations, and tabs with Mylar reinforcement in 16 designer colors. If you
have questions about tabs, give us a call, we’ll be happy to consult with you
on design.
5. Paper pearls. In Britain’s Printing World, Jefferson Smurfit Group’s
deputy chairman Dermot Smurfit warned us that paper industry “Shareholders
will no longer tolerate the returns they are getting from [the paper] sector.”
Citing negative returns for nine of the past ten years, he says
“papermakers will not produce paper unless they have prior demand.” Viewed
alongside the continuing M&A activity in this industry sector, we’d better
strap in for a bumpy paper supply and demand ride.
