1. Great Vendors Should be Shared. Every so often there’s a vendor who’s too good not to share. For us that’s Evan Stanley at Atlas Copco. He has provided us with air compressor/air dryer service for years. He comes in, shares useful info, asks how he can help, listens, handles it, and moves on. Sweet. So, if you are having troubles with the air system in your shop, one call can bring resolution: 206-391-4228. Or check out Atlas Copco’s website. Click here It would be interesting to poll customers to find out how often your sales folks get unsolicited referrals.

2. Gotta Love This Guy. In Dick Gorelick’s most recent newsletter, he made this observation: “Leap Year, which is any year evenly divisible by four, except for century years, which must be divisible by four-hundred.  Because the Gregorian year is 27 seconds longer than the astronomical year, we'll be three days off by the year 12,008.  Somebody needs to pay for this, so consider including this calculation in pressroom running speeds.” Now there’s an idea to boost the bottom line.

3. Best Practices (or Maybe Not). The folks at a website I was referred to give four reasons why the buzz of the day--Best Practices--should be dumped. In addition to “they rarely work,” he says most are recycled advice and, in truth, the best practices are those that are generated from employees, not management. In other words, don’t believe everything you are told by consultants. I love it when folks call them as they see them. Check it out, click here.

4. Kodak Binds with Unibind. On the heels of Polaroid’s announcement it would discontinue making film in 2009, Kodak announced its partnership with Peleman Industries--manufacturer of Unibind binding, lamination, and presentation materials--to offer lay-flat photobooks and calendars (hardcover and softcover) in Kodak kiosks around the US. The service went live in December 2007. Just proves that creative problem solving can lead to creative profit making. Click here.

5. Perfecting the Perfect Shot of Joe. Faced with declining sales growth and brand perception, Starbucks is closing 7,100 stores nationwide on Tuesday February 26 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm to retrain its baristas in the art of creating the perfect coffee drink. Despite the extra dollars and time this would cost, we all might take away a lesson here and schedule occasional retraining of our own employees. For the whole story, click here.
