1. More Pockets. We have upgraded our collator so it now has 21 total pockets. This increases the number of pickups per pass and should shorten the turn time on collating jobs. Keep us in mind for all your collating needs – 50# offset 2 pagers to folded signatures, small (3 1/2 x 4 1/2) to large (12 1/2 x 18” spine). Wire-O and plastic spiral books with interspersed tabs run especially well on that equipment. We can also gather folded signatures to be four-side trimmed and punched for mechanical binding. The major benefit, though, is turn times are even faster than before.

2. Beantown Suprise. My peer group had its quarterly meeting this past week in Boston. Coincidentally, the On Demand Expo 2007 was in town at the same time, and a few of us dropped by to check it out. I'm here to tell you the show was absolutely huge in terms of floor space. According to Printing Impressions, "...exhibitors were speculating that show floor traffic was lighter than last year." But you could have fooled me. The show might be worth putting on your calendar for next year. For more, click here.

3. Gender Gap. One would assume that as the work world becomes more accepting of women (not to mention more populated by women), the gender gap in pay would shrink. The truth, according to a recent study by the American Association of University Women Educational Foundation found that, "One year out of college, women working full time earn 80% of what men earn...Ten years later, women earn 69% as much as men." I have to say those are surprising statistics to me. Pay should be a matter of performance, and in my experience in my shop, women are just as capable as men. And that cuts both ways – they're just as capable as men of both success and failure. For more, click here.

4. Is the Internet Your Friend? More printing business "sturm und drangwas expected last month when Kodak announced its new website, creative.kodak.com, which lets small-office and home-office customers order short-run digital color prints off the Internet. It looked like another case of a big fish moving into a small pond. However, it turns out that Kodak is outsourcing the actual printing of these short-run jobs to small local printers. In fact, you can sign up to participate. The Internet is truly an example of market neutrality – it brings the good with the bad. For more, click here.

5. PIA/GATF Alert. PIA/GATF is looking for companies to participate in its Ratio Study. The Study has been a major benchmark for printing companies to measure their performance against one another. To participate in this year’s PIA/GATF Ratios study go here and download and complete an Excel or a PDF file, then return the completed form to: 2007 PIA/GATF Ratio Study, MargolisBecker, 555 City Line Avenue, Suite 460, Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004. You only have until April 30 so get started and find out where you stack up with your competition!
