Seattle Bindery
Newsletter: Issue #16. We welcome your comments.
1. Brief Report on printCafé user conference; brief because there’s not much
to report. Since Seattle Bindery uses Programmed Solutions (PSI), I went to the
conference hoping to get a commitment from printCafé to continue to support PSI,
Logic and Hagen with current pricing, support and development. I got that. What
I didn’t get were specifics about software being developed to link printers to
trade shops, like binderies. However, printer modules are up and running and
several printers signed contracts at the conference.
2. We just ran a job that proved the worth of our 30” x 50” folder. 460,000
pieces ran through the folder – three up and slit. But the best part was the fact that the equipment was able to
handle the first 28” fold, a feat no other trade shop in our market could do
without reducing to two-up and doubling the folding time. Slick!
3. Here’s the latest in dot-com backlash. The June 12th edition of online
WiredNews featured an article entitled “Dot-Coms? They’re for Losers.”
Seems industry analysts and VCs are not backing, but backing off
businesses with prefixes i-, e- and dot-com suffixes calling them “excess
verbiage.” A senior vp at consulting firm Morgen Walke Associates told
companies with a dot-com in their name, “There ain’t no way your IPO is
getting priced soon.”
4. Not to be left in the dust, noosh.com is this week sponsoring and giving a
presentation to the Direct Marketing Club of Southern California, a very healthy
organization made up of marcom, agency and design pros who specialize in direct
marketing. Seems like their customer-centric business model continues to drive
their marketing efforts.
5. We’re expecting . . . Yes, we’re about to purchase a new Itoh paper
cutter, the “elegant” and “ergonomic” (their words, not mine) new Model
RC-DX that features a double arm pull system for cutting accuracy, increased
speed of the back gauge, clamp and knife timing for improved performance and, ta
da! large memory capacity that significantly increases production capacity.
