Bindery Newsletter: Issue #15. We welcome your comments.
1. Lots of us are wondering what it means when Banta, Donnelley, Quad/Graphics
and Quebecor announce they’re forming a “partnership.” As reported in the
May 31st issue of Graphic Arts Monthly e-GAM, their alliance is designed to
“create supply-chain efficiencies by establishing standards and leveraging
enabling technologies.” Perhaps they’re positioning themselves to get a cut
of the e-commerce pie?
2. A reminder that custom tabs are one of Seattle Bindery’s hottest
specialties in terms of speed and capabilities. Our equipment has a throughput
of 28,000 tabs per hour! Our tabs come in a wide variety of sizes and we offer
Mylar-reinforcing in a rainbow of colors. And if your corporate
clients ask if you know where to find precut blank tabs for use in digital
publishing systems, Seattle Bindery’s the answer. Call us if you’d like a
free copy of our “Tips for Tabs” booklet. More information on tabs can also
be found in the library on our website at www.seattlebindery.com.
3. Remember my mentioning Digimarc, the company that embeds a proprietary
digital watermark in all kinds of substrates? Well, the company recently
announced signing up 130 magazines that will use its innovative MediaBridge
technology. Powerhouses like Good Housekeeping, GQ and People magazine are
clamoring to use this breakthrough technology.
4. Lunch is on us. Don’t forget that we conduct “on-demand” lunchtime
tours of our facility . . . complete with a box lunch from Briazz. We think
you’ll be impressed with our squeaky clean, efficiently organized 30,000
square foot facility. If you’d like to schedule a tour, just give Judy a call
and pick a convenient time.
5. E-publishing wars heat up . . . Microsoft and Time Warner are duking it out
on the time-to-market front, with each scurrying to get marquee authors,
publishing houses and electronics makers on board. Microsoft announced alliances
with two of the top U.S. trade publishers and a partnership with French
electronics maker Thomson Multimedia to supply more than half a
million e-book devices this fall. Time Warner recently announced the creation of
iPublish and iWrite (similar to Xlibris), its online publishing ventures.
