Seattle Bindery Newsletter: Issue #14. We welcome your comments.

1. “Golden” glow: Seattle Bindery wishes to thank the Craftsmen Club for its recent recognition of our work. We received a gold award for our diecutting and embossing work on the Odelia Pacific Corporation presentation folder at the recent Gallery of Fine Printing awards ceremony.

2. PrintCafé update: The Pittsburg-based e-commerce “solution” may get a run for its money on the European front. Two days after it launched at Drupa, European contender Internet-based e-Solution announced its entry on the scene, boasting end-to-end print management and full integration with every type of press, including planographic, web, sheetfed and label, as well as
digital and screen printing equipment. Available in 16 languages, the entire system starts at 50k euros ($45k U.S.) Then there’s the recent letter I received from another e-commerce contender, CRC Information Systems, who announced they’ll be demonstrating their “solution” in the same hotel where PrintCafé is holding its 1st annual users conference. This one gets an A+ for chutzpah!

3. First casualty? Beleaguered Noosh withdrew its $48 million IPO this week, perhaps the first to fall victim to the nervous technology market these days. The Palo Alto-based firm scrapped its 4-million-share offering at $11 to $13 due to the difficult IPO environment. Oh what a difference a few months makes!

4. Demise of direct mail? According to the May 15th issue of iMarketing News, industry research firm Jupiter Communications predicts commercial email will “skyrocket from $164 million to more than $7 billion” over the next five years.” While the author seems to think this doesn’t bode well for direct mail printing, I’m reminded of a recent piece about Sports Illustrated spending a small fortune developing its 3-D cover (mailed with glasses attached!) for its 2000 annual swimsuit issue last March. Advancements in printing appear to be keeping pace with digital information delivery.

5. Piece of wisdom: This is from IAPHC (Craftsmen Club) chairman Tony Sarubbi: “Listen more than you speak . . . Too often our minds are formulating our next question or response instead of actually hearing what the other person has to say.” It’s advice I try to practice when I have issues with employees and the occasional customer with a complaint (not to mention my two teenage daughters!).
