1. Improved Web Search Feature. We recently upgraded the search feature on our website. Now, you can find information on our site with one click. Simply click on the search button and enter a subject and our entire website will be combed. This is a great way to find past articles we have published. The upgrade utilizes Google’s search technology and is free and easy to install. Maybe it’s right for your website. Give Chris a call to find out more.

2. Off the Clock. An interesting article ran in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer on Monday concerning a perceived increase in “off the clock” cost-cutting practices. This situation involves encouraging employees to work without reporting their time. While it may increase profits by lowering costs in the short term, the question is at what cost? For some companies, including several prominent local firms, the cost has been financial settlements to litigious employees. The article notes that the Labor Department has “grown more aggressive” in their enforcement actions and believes that “It is one of the more common violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act.” I believe that cutting corners for the short term only leads to long-term trouble. The best way out of a sluggish economy is to find the best workers and pay them fairly. For the full Seattle PI article, see http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/201431_offclock29.html

3. Customer Service First. In the publisher’s note of Printer’s Northwest Trader‘s annual bindery edition in October, Sandy Hubbard, the publisher, emphasized the importance of people, and not big iron, as the cornerstone of the bindery business. Obviously, a bindery’s capabilities are important, but the ability of people to deliver those capabilities is equally important. At Seattle Bindery our commitment to customer service has always been our top priority. That’s one reason we’re always asking for your feedback – so we can find new ways to improve that service.

4. Finishing Touches. The holidays are upon us and you may be getting or placing orders for greeting cards, party invitations, and the like. Here are some ideas: What if your cards were diecut in the shape of a Christmas tree or a seven-branched menorah, instead of the usual rectangle? Diecutting is a wonderful way to make your holiday mailings stand out. Or, consider foil-stamping. Almost anything that can withstand heat and pressure can be foil-stamped. Like diecuts, foil-stamping adds an eye-catching element to any piece. Call us or check our website’s search function for more on diecutting and foil-stamping options. We’re here to help.

5. Driven. We’re happy to announce that we’ve hired Todd McLeod as our new CDL (Commercial Drivers License) driver. Todd started on November 8th and has already had the opportunity to meet many of you. Please be sure to say “hello” when you see him. Todd’s wife is a nurse and they have a son in college and a daughter in high school. Thanks to all of you who responded to our request and passed on the names of candidates. Todd will be a tremendous asset to Seattle Bindery.
