1. An Eyelet for an Eyelet. We told you about our new eyelet capabilities in our last issue. Well, we‘re proud to say we’ve completed our first couple of jobs with it. Both customers wanted something eye-catching and the eyelet machine was the perfect solution. For one, we produced a dual panel Dial – two round cardboard pieces joined by an eyelet – a familiar component in some board games. Rotating the top panel of the dial reveals information through a diecut rectangle. See http://www.aeroassemblies.com/eyeleting/dials.htm for a similar product. For the other, we added flash to a product hang tag. Ask us how we can put eyelet technology to use on your next project. You’ll be eyeful amazed!

2. Graph Expo. I attended another Graph Expo this year. Usually, I come away excited about a particularly ingenious new machine or a breakthrough tech capability. That didn’t happen this year. Instead, I was reminded of the benefits of “networking,” which in my case means seeing a bunch of old friends, hearing some funny stories, and generally getting a read on the mood of our industry. While technology often drives this business forward, it’s the people side of print that makes the job truly worthwhile. This year, more than any other, reminded me that the Graph Expo is a fantastic way to stay in touch.

3. Printing Journal‘s Demise. Cygnus Publishing took the industry by surprise when they announced the cancellation of their Graphics Network publications, which included the Printing Journal. According to writenews.com, Jann Levesque, group publisher of Graphic Networks, said, “The printing and graphics industry took a hit after 9/11 that particularly affected the regional markets, with some experiencing more than three solid years of decline.” Levesque did suggest the cancellation may be temporary, if the market shows an improvement. As a former contributor, I hope to see the Printing Journal back soon. For more on Cygnus check out: www.writenews.com/cgi-bin/deadzone.pl?zone=8250401

4. Ichiro. I just want to take a moment to tip my cap to Ichiro Suzuki, the sublime right fielder for our hometown Mariners. He broke the 84-year-old-record for hits in a season, smacking a total of 262. Amazing. His secret? Staying focused on the task at hand. As he told a reporter once, “If I chased numbers, maybe I wouldn’t have as good results.” Words to do business by.

5. Help Needed. While our good friend and long-time delivery driver, Richard Carlson, continues his brave battle with cancer, we are looking for someone interested in taking over his duties. It’s a day-time shift, requires a commercial driver‘s license. (for license information visit http://www.dol.wa.gov/ds/cdlgui
de.htm), A working knowledge of the greater Puget Sound region is a plus. Starting pay will depend on experience. If you know of anyone looking to work with a great company, send them our way. Thanks.
