Seattle Bindery Newsletter: Issue #10. We welcome your comments.

1. Perhaps the hottest ticket in town (or at least in the industry) is PPI’s “E-Commerce for Printers” session scheduled for April 11th 2pm to 7pm, to be held in the Courtyard by Marriott, close to Lake Union and Seattle Bindery’s old stomping grounds. Presenters include reps from all the big players and some newbies: Collabria, Impresse, MediaFlex, Noosh, PrintCafe, Printnation,
Printeralliance and Sprockets. Don’t miss this one.

2. BTW: Per The Industry Standard, here’s the Year 2000 IPO lineup for some of those print procurement and management “solutions:” Q1 (PrintCafe, iPrint and Noosh), Q2 (Collabria and Impresse.) Paper Exchange is expected to go public in the second quarter, as well.

3. Words from the wise: Quoting PIA’s E-Commerce Council Chair Lyn Johnson, “E-commerce is not only the wave of the future, it’s the wave of the present. Those that don’t ride it will be under it.” Then there are the interesting statistics in an article in GATF World: “The absence of net
growth in the graphic arts supplies sector over the next two years . . . reflects a decline in shipments of consumables due to technology substitution factors.” On the other hand, digital proofing products are expected to see growth rates increase 30% annually. It’s clear that
all-digital workflow is the happenin’ thing!

4. I recently made the rounds of several San Francisco Bay Area bindery and finishing houses as a part of the BIA/SF conference. I enjoy these on-site visits, since I always gain useful information about such things as equipment configuration to improve workflow, interesting machinery
combinations, and and waste control programs. If you’re planning a trip out of town and in a region where you won’t be perceived a competitor, I encourage you to contact the local or regional industry association to help set up visits to printers in the area.

5. I know we’ve talked about our Kleenstick (two-sided peel and stick tape) capabilities before, but I may have omitted the fact that we can run Kleenstick on a 44-inch sheet. (We just finished a job that required 2.5 million inches of Kleenstick tape!) Give me a call; I’d be happy to show you some interesting examples of how smart designers have used this to full advantage.
