The case study
below describes a particularly challenging Seattle Bindery project. We hope
you find it interesting and instructive. If you have questions about the
equipment, techniques, or other details of the project, feel free to call us
at 425-656-8210.
It’s fun
to take on a job that utilizes a whole bunch of our capabilities, especially
when the combination of those skills show off how we’re different from
others in our market. So we were pleased when one of our favorite customers
brought us this training manual, since it required die cut tabs, scoring,
gluing, folding, collating, punching and, finally, red twin-loop Wire-O™.
While the turnaround was a challenge—the original eighteen days were reduced
to fourteen—we knew we’d make deadline since the job was a perfect fit for
the set-up and flow of our operations.
The
first part of the job to come in was the 8-up arched custom tabs on 28 x
40-inch sheets, which we put on our Bobst die cutter. When the front and
back covers arrived, they were immediately sent to our letterpress
department for scoring. We needed to make the back covers double-thick, so
we scored, folded and glued them as a four page, and then sent both front
and back covers to be punched. Seventy-six forms on ten 28 x 40-inch press
sheets arrived and were also trimmed. All the elements—covers, forms, and
tabs—were punched on our Kugler high speed autopunch and then collated on
our Muller collator.
We were
then ready for the Wire-O binding, but where was that Wire-O? Turns out
delivery of the special red wire was the only hiccup in the entire
project—it was a special order and took longer than expected. But minutes
after it arrived the job was running on our STL-1000 inserter. The entire
job was boxed up, 25 per box, and shipped to the customer. . .on deadline.
Each of
these operations by themselves is pretty unremarkable, in terms of
capability. What we think is impressive—though we may be a bit biased—is our
ability to run a job through all the different processes in perfect,
synchronized harmony. This turned out to be the ideal job to prove it.
