The case study
below describes a particularly challenging Seattle Bindery project. We hope
you find it interesting and instructive. If you have questions about the

Bindery can be a tough business, but it’s nothing
compared to dock work. We found
that out when a significant customer of ours approached us with a lamination
job. They had printed a 16-page brochure booklet for an international port
management company. The booklet included a company overview, letter from the
President, and a listing of all of the company’s equipment for the loading
and unloading of cargo. The books were to be used by their longshoremen, so
they wanted a durable design that could survive the wear and tear common to
life on the docks. Lamination was the perfect solution.
Our customer came to Seattle Bindery because they
needed not just
lamination, but a full selection of finishing options to make the books both
durable and beautiful. And they needed it done in under seven days. The book
used two different stocks and sheet sizes, the larger of which was 9-1/2” by
13-1/2” and required letterpress scoring and full coverage matte lamination.
The smaller sized, 70# sheet accommodated the letter from the President and
the overview.
Both sections needed to be folded and stitched
together. The combination of the
four-color cross-over sections with the smaller interior sheets made for a
striking visual effect. To ensure that the lamination would be sealed
tightly when the book was bound, Seattle Bindery broke the book into four
four-page sections—two large sections and two smaller sections. It was a
solution that significantly cut delivery time of the 2,500 books.
“The
client chose us because we have integrated all of these finishing operations
under one roof," explains Milt Vine, Seattle
Bindery’s President, “which allows us to
save customers both time and money. And managing projects with us is so much
easier, since customers need to deal with only one vendor.”
Not only did Seattle Bindery prove its skill in
lamination—being able to bind laminated oversize sheets with smaller
untrimmed sections is always a challenge—it also proved itself capable of
coming up with creative solutions to speed production, delivering the job
ahead of deadline. Even a longshoreman would be impressed with that.
