The case study
below describes a particularly challenging Seattle Bindery project. We hope
you find it interesting and instructive. If you have questions about the
equipment, techniques, or other details of the project, feel free to call us

Applying transfer
tape to Point of Purchase (POP)
displays can sometimes be a
challenge,
particularly when it's required in odd places on a sheet. Even more
challenging is affixing it to large press sheets. But as one of the few
binderies in the area that can handle big press sheets, that's just what
Seattle Bindery did on this job . . . and did it on a searing turn time.
The customer, a large screen printer, delivered
the first batch of the 5,200 printed sheets on a Wednesday afternoon. The
job was due back to the customer on Friday. The Seattle Bindery team went
right to work setting up our applicator equipment and began running the job.
The transfer
tape
would be applied to 1,300 each of 4 different versions of the
displays. Each poster was on 24pt. board and would later be diecut, scored,
and folded to achieve a double thickness.
"We
knew the deadline would be difficult to meet unless we figured out a way to
increase throughput," says Seattle Bindery President, Milt Vine. "So, we
brainstormed how best to configure the equipment for maximum efficiency, We
hit on the idea of combining two machines that weren't designed to run
together. It worked like a charm."
When the remaining posters came in Thursday
afternoon, production was in full swing. The transfer
tape
was the "glue" that
fastened the two sides together. The Seattle Bindery team applied two strips
on either side of the 34-inch direction, stopping in the middle of the
sheet, which is a tricky operation. The customer picked up the job in
batches as they came off the equipment to perform the final production
processes before delivering to his client.
"The last posters were out the door mid-day
Friday," says Bill Davey, Bindery Manager. "Once we figured out how to
combine equipment, the workflow was seamless. It was a great demonstration
of creative problem solving."
