The case study
below describes a particularly challenging Seattle Bindery project. We hope
you find it interesting and instructive. If you have questions about the
equipment, techniques, or other details of the project, feel free to call us
at 425-656-8210.
Sometimes
you just have to invent a new word to get the meaning across, or a new way
of doing something to get the job done. This project—60,000 round-corner
trimmed pads of tear-off-and-return entry forms to be used in the client’s
retail stores—required some adroit handwork, not to mention a lot of
creative problem solving to get it finished and delivered by deadline.
The deadline was the first challenge . . . it was inviolate, because it was
predicated on the rollout of a national campaign to stores across the
country. The second challenge was the large quantity that had to be turned
around in the short timeframe. But, perhaps the biggest test was finding the
best glue that would work on the coated stock that was flooded with an
aqueous coating.
To meet the first challenge, we acquired a second round-corner trimmer, thus
doubling our capacity. The 40-inch press sheets were delivered 64-up, so we
had to determine the most efficient way of trimming and collating them. We
had one critical factor in our favor: Our collating equipment is able to
accommodate a smaller size sheet than most other collating machines in the
market.
After conducting multiple production meetings and running several tests, we
settled
on the most efficient way to run this particular job. We concluded that by
reducing the numbers “up” in each stage of production—collating, trimming,
and round-cornering—we would actually reduce the overall production cycle.
We then asked our glue supplier to provide multiple samples of different
padding glues to find just the right mix. After several trials, we found a
formula that would hold the flood-coated printed stock and would also
separate easily for the end user.
We delivered the job on schedule and on budget, and the national rollout went
out without a hitch.
While you may not have a client asking for a job exactly like this, we hope
this project proves that we have what it takes to figure out the fastest,
most cost-effective solution for any finishing project. Give us a call.
